In this video, you will learn how to generate SSH public and private key pairs using PuTTYgen and use these SSH key pairs to connect to your cloud server or virtual private server (VPS) via PuTTY. When logging in to your VPS you often have two options to authenticate, either by SSH key or Password. Authenticating by SSH keys is more secure and is therefore the preferred login methos. If you are used to using a password to connect to your cloud server, you may encounter a scenario where there is no option to login via a password and therefore must use an SSH key pair to authenticate.

Steps To Generate A SSH Public/Private Key Pair & Login To Your VPS:

1. Log in to your server host provider and begin creating your cloud server
2. To add a Public SSH Key for authentication you will need to generate it. To do this you will need to download and install PuTTY (includes PuTTYgen). You can do so here https://www.putty.org/ or follow this step by step video of mine    / 0ptzpttwra  
3. Once you got PuTTY and all its complementary software, open PuTTYgen (PuTTY Key Generator)
4. Click Generate and move your mouse randomly to generate your public and private key pair
5. Copy and paste your public key which starts with "ssh-rsa" into the appropriate section on your VPS to add it and finish the creation process of your cloud server
6. In PuTTYgen save your Public key on your local machine and also save your Private key as a backup
7. Once your server is created, copy it's public IPV4 address and open up the PuTTY program
8. Paste in your servers IP address into the hostname section of PuTTY
9. Click the + symbol next to the SSH category in PuTTY
10. Click Auth
11. Click Browse and find your Private SSH key that you generated using PuTTYgen and saved on your local device.
12. Click Open to select it and then click Open again on PuTTY
13. The PuTTY command line terminal will then open and you should see Login as at the top left of the terminal
14. Type root and press Enter on your keyboard to be logged in.

Congratulations, you have successfully generated your SSH public and private key pair using PuTTYgen and logged into your cloud server using PuTTY's SSH key authentication.
