In the written history of the exploration of Grand Canyon little mention is usually made of Charles Doolittle Walcott’s nearly three months spent below the rim over the winter of 1882-1883. Seemingly, his efforts were overshadowed by Clarence Dutton’s “Tertiary History of the Grand Canyon District,” as well as various accounts of running the Colorado River by Powell and Stanton and stories involving early canyon entrepreneurs like Pete Berry, W.W. Bass and John Hance. Yet, Walcott blazed a trail down into Nankoweap Canyon and his geologic study took him all the way to Asbestos Canyon.

Biography: Dr. Dennis Foster worked on the South Rim and the North Rim of Grand Canyon in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Since those days he has maintained an avid interest in the canyon's history. He has made many hundreds of hikes into the Grand Canyon and has written about many of his treks for the local Flagstaff newspaper. He has a Ph.D. in economics and taught in the W.A. Franke College of Business at Northern Arizona University from 1990 until 2023, when he retired.
