It Couldn't Get Worse Could It?
Trains at Carlisle.
2 excursion loco fails
10-12 July 2022

On Sunday 10th, Carlisle saw few regular passenger trains and the odd freight. A Surprise working was an ROG class 37 heading from Derby to Kilmarnock. It returned south on the Tuesday. The Colas / Network Rail New Measurement train also made an appearance. The highlight for me was the appearance of Jubilee class 45690 Leander. All looked good until the loco was running around its train, left in platform 1. It took water at High Wapping Sidings rather than when it got to Upperby for turning. Turned out that whilst at Carlisle a superheater element failed with the result that there was no way Leander could haul a train. No auxiliary diesel either so one was sent via the WCML from Steamtown, Carnforth,

Monday 11th was, I suppose, an ordinary day. Apart from TPE cancellations (the norm these days) everything appeared to be running smoothly. I recorded trains both at Etterby, north of the city, and on the station. Trains included TPE 68s, including one being delivered from York en route to the DRS Kingmoor TMD.

Tuesday 12th was when West Coast had more bad luck. We couldn't work out, from Real Time Trains, what was happening at Hellifield. Turned out British India Line had failed at Bentham, en route from Carnforth to Hellifield (where it would have coupled onto the Dalesman). A pipe connecting the tender to the loco had burst. As a result the pair of 37s hauled the Dalesman all the way to Carlisle and back. So bad for the steam enthusiasts but good for lovers of classic diesels and Class 37s!
