A 3-minute reflection from the documentary "Your Pain Was Born Here" about my coming out under the male gaze, patriarchy, and the people I met. Circa 2020 :)

"Your Pain Was Born Here Is" a journey across 5 countries throughout Europe, exploring the Black narrative outside of the American identity. Beginning in 2017, now, after 8 years: A coming of age story & a love letter to the Black diaspora.

Why are Black Americans the only ones who can speak on the Black experience? I wanted to understand why the Black community had such internal conflicts around who is and isn’t Black. But from the perspective of Black bodies on the land that isn't theirs – European territory.

We’re called the diaspora for a reason - and it was by design. What will it take for us to come together, no matter our differences? I asked different Black and Brown people across 5 European countries what they thought of Black Americans, their Black experiences, and reclaiming our narrative.
