The Last Wolf: A Story of England in the Fourteenth Century by Dr Bill Shannon
Around the year 1900, Mrs Jerome Mercier published a little book, telling a romantic tale culminating in a wild hunt after England’s last wolf, ending with its being killed on Humphrey Head. Mrs Mercier herself says she got the tale from a book by James Stockdale, published in 1872, but in fact the story seems to have first appeared in print in 1820, although its origin seems to relate to the Harrington Tomb, a mid-14th century monument in Cartmel Priory.
In the talk we will follow the hunt, guided by historian Bill Shannon, through the Cartmel Peninsular - and try to disentangle fact from fantasy.
