In Gasoline Direct Injection or GDI engine, gasoline is injected straight into the combustion chamber of the cylinder, as opposed to multipoint Port Fuel Injection or PFI, where fuel is injected into the intake manifold. GDI engines make for improvements in fuel economy and higher power output over PFI engines. This is achieved by precisely controlling the fuel quantity and the injection timing to the cylinders.

Depending on engine speed and load, GDI can have a few operational modes, such as:

Homogeneous stoichiometric mode or regular fuel injection as you all know it.
Homogeneous lean mode or lean burn.
Stratified mode or ultra lean on compression mode.
