Hello friends, I am Dr Praveen Kammar, a cancer surgeon specializing in digestive system cancers and gynecological cancers. In our earlier videos, we explored how cancer begins, spreads, and the role of the immune system.
Today, we take it further and understand how cancer immunotherapy treatment boosts your immune system to fight cancer cells.

Cancer develops when abnormal cells with genetic mutations escape immune surveillance. Normally, our immune system (natural killer cells, T-cells) destroys such cells. But tumors evolve ways to hide or suppress immunity. Immunotherapy equips your immune system with the tools to recognize and attack cancer.

How cancer cells evade immunity:
Hiding their identity (receptor loss)
Suppressing immune response
Activating checkpoints on T-cells (blocked by checkpoint inhibitors)
Creating a hostile tumor environment
Overpowering by rapid growth and large numbers

Types of Cancer Immunotherapy:
Monoclonal Antibodies: Artificial antibodies targeting cancer cells.
Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: Block checkpoint receptors to reactivate T-cells.
CAR T-Cell Therapy: Genetically modified T-cells designed to kill cancer.
Cancer Vaccines: Prepare the immune system to recognize cancer.
Cytokine Therapy: Immune chemicals used to control cancer.

Why it matters: Immunotherapy is one of the most advanced approaches in modern oncology. It can be used in specific cancers and stages, often with significant benefits.

About Dr. Praveen Kammar

Dr Praveen Kammar is a surgical oncologist practising in the city of Mumbai.
He completed his MCh course in surgical oncology from the reputed Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, one of the premier cancer care centres in the country. He also holds a fellowship in Colorectal surgery from Yopnsei cancer centre, Seoul, South Korea. Dr Praveen’s main area of focus is colorectal and GI oncology, Gynecological cancers, minimal access surgeries for abdominal and thoracic malignancies, transanal surgeries, and sphincter-saving surgeries for rectal cancer, cytoreductive surgeries, and HIPEC for advanced abdominal cancers.
