We finally get to see Britannia leading around a gate, and winning the race. They started well, making gains on the left side of the course and by the first cross after both teams had tacked back, Britannia pulled off a lee bow tack on Luna Rossa. From there they reached the first gate ahead and for the first time in the finals series Britannia played the leader around the course. It looked like they chose when to cover and when not, as if not wanting to compete head to head in a tacking duel with Luna Rossa. They led around each mark though. During the last upwind leg, Luna Rossa began to close in, shrinking the lead, and with a split entry to the final top gate the boats were only 9 secs apart (over 30 secs at the previous gate). At this distance, Luna Rossa were only one mistake away from Britannia who managed to hold them off to finish 14secs in front.
