What is anaemia?
Anaemia is a condition characterised by low red blood cell count or haemoglobin levels, leading to inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues.

Causes of Anemia in Pregnancy
Iron deficiency: Most common cause, due to increased demand and inadequate intake
Folate deficiency: Essential for fetal growth and development
Vitamin B12 deficiency: Important for red blood cell production
Chronic diseases: Conditions like malaria, hookworm infestation, and chronic infections

Signs and Symptoms
Fatigue: Feeling tired or weak
Pallor: Pale skin and mucous membranes
Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing or exertional dyspnea
Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or dizzy

Risks and Complications
Preterm labor: Increased risk of premature birth
Low birth weight: Babies may be born underweight
Maternal mortality: Severe anemia can increase risk of maternal death

Management and Treatment
Iron supplements: Ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate tablets
Dietary changes: Increase iron-rich foods like leafy greens, beans, and fortified cereals
Folate supplements: Folic acid tablets to prevent neural tube defects
Monitoring: Regular hemoglobin checks and fetal monitoring

Prevention
Prenatal care: Regular check-ups and screening for anemia
Nutrition education: Counsel on iron-rich foods and supplements
Iron prophylaxis: Routine iron supplementation in pregnancy
