In Valmiki Ramayana, there is an incident of King Dashrath's soul getting salvation by offering Pind Daan to Mother Sita. During the exile, Lord Ram, Lakshman and Mother Sita reached Gaya Dham to perform Shraddha during Pitru Paksha. Brahmin Dev requested Mother Sita that the time for Pind Daan was running out. Hearing this, Sita ji's anxiety was also increasing because Shri Ram and Lakshman had not yet returned, after this the soul of Dashrath ji made her realize that the time for Pind Daan was passing, knowing this Mother Sita got confused, Then Mother Sita, understanding the importance of time, decided that she herself would perform Pind Daan of her father-in-law King Dasharatha. Taking the Banyan tree, crow, Tulsi, Brahmin and cow present there along with the river Falgu as witnesses, he performed Pinda Daan of late King Dasharatha. After this ritual, as soon as he prayed with folded hands, King Dashrath accepted the Pinda Daan of Mother Sita. Mother Sita was happy that Dashrath ji had accepted her worship, but she also knew that Lord Ram would not accept this, because Pind Daan cannot be done without a son.
After some time, Lord Ram and Lakshman came with the material and asked about Pind Daan, then Mother Sita said that due to the passage of time, I myself did Pind Daan, Lord Ram could not believe that, without a son. And how can Pind Daan be performed and accepted without material, then Sita ji said that the Falgu river, Tulsi, crow, cow, banyan tree and Brahmins present there can testify to the Shraddha ritual performed by her.
When Lord Ram asked all of them whether it was true or not about Pind Daan, then Falgu river, cow, crow, Tulsi and Brahmin, seeing the anger of Lord Ram, lied that Mother Sita did not do any Pind Daan. Did. Only the Banyan tree told the truth that Mother Sita donated the body of King Dashrath in a formal manner by keeping everyone as a witness. When the five witnesses lied, Mother Sita got angry and cursed them for life. On speaking the truth, Mother Sita blessed the banyan tree that it will have a long life and will provide shade to others and a devoted woman will remember her and wish for the long life of her husband.
