ANTIOCH, TENNESSEE — A 51-year-old man was shot and killed by police after he attacked moviegoers at the Carmike Hickory 8 movie theater in suburban Antioch, Tennessee on Wednesday. Twenty people were reportedly inside the theater at the time of the attack.

The man was reportedly wearing a surgical mask when he attacked a theater of 20 moviegoers during a showing of "Mad Max: Fury Road". The suspect used pepper spray on three moviegoers, two women, aged 53 and 17, and a 58-year-old man. The man also superficial wound to the arm, presumably when the suspect attacked him with a hatchet, according to police spokesman Don Aaron.

Aaron said witnesses alerted two South Precinct officers conducting a traffic stop nearby at around 1:13 p.m. of the attack. The two officers arrived at the theater two minutes later.

The suspect, who was reportedly armed with a pellet gun, fired on one of the officers when he entered the pepper-spray-filled theater. The officer returned fire before backing out of the theater.

The suspect then tried to escape out the rear door of the movie theater, where the SWAT team shot and killed him at 1:54 p.m.

"There was gunfire and the gunman is deceased just inside the movie theater," Aaron said. "So we believe the imminent threat has been ended."

Police have examined the gunman's backpack and another backpack he left in the theater, with the bomb squad detonating at least one of them at around 4 p.m., said Aaron.

All three people injured were treated at the scene. The shooting comes just two weeks after another deadly shooting inside a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana that left two people dead and nine people injured.
