Biotin is an essential, water-soluble, B vitamin also known as vitamin B7. Orally, biotin is used for preventing and treating biotin deficiency. But most people take it to enhance their hair, skin, and nails. But does Biotin live-up to the hype or is it another supplement scam? I’ve taken look at the scientific research and I’ve classified it as either harmful, helpful or a hoax.

In 2017 a meta-analysis looked at biotin supplementing. This analysis showed improvement of hair and nail growth on supplementation in patients with *established biotin deficiency* Thats the key. These patients had a biotin deficiency, which is actually pretty rare in the US. (Those with alcohol dependence, women who are pregnant or break feeding, or individuals who have taken an anti seizure medication to treat epilepsy for over a year may be at risk for biotin deficiencies.)
Preliminary evidence shows that biotin 2.5 mg daily taken orally for 1.5 to 15 months increases the thickness and decreases the splitting of fingernails and toenails in people with brittle nails. However, the study didn’t explicitly mention biotin deficiencies and it was tested on a very small number of individuals.Despite this, there have been no randomized, controlled trials to prove the efficacy of supplementation with biotin in normal, healthy individuals to improve growth or strength of hair or nails.
I’m classifying this supplement for hair, skin and nails a hoax to normal healthy individuals. The claims for improving hair, skin, and nails are supported, at best, by only a few case reports and small studies that don’t do a great job at determining biotin deficiencies. However, I do think it’s helpful to those who really do have a biotin deficiency, which can be determined with a simple blood test. And like I mentioned before, biotin taken appropriately doesn’t seem to show any harmful side effects. However, even if I thought I had a deficiency, I don’t think I would waste the money on a supplement without knowing for sure.
As always it’s important to talk with your doctor and pharmacist before starting any supplementation to ensure there are no dangerous interactions with your current medications, supplements or disease states.
