Alaska, Canada, Florida, and the Bahamas — Crossing Off Bucket List Adventures
In August and September, I spent 6.5 weeks continuing my mission of crossing off bucket-list destinations. The journey started with 3.5 weeks in Alaska and Vancouver as part of the Royal Caribbean Ultimate World Cruise Reunion trip. I explored Baranof Island, Juneau, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Haines, Mount Waddington, the Inside Passage, and Vancouver—and got up close and personal with stunning glaciers.
Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE crab, and Alaska didn’t disappoint. Let’s just say I ate so much crab that I sometimes couldn’t even finish my plate. And while food was definitely a highlight, I was surprised to discover a new fascination: bears! The Discover Fortress of the Bear excursion turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
Packing for this adventure was its own challenge. Seriously, how do you prepare for Alaska and the Bahamas in one trip? I’ll admit it: I overpacked (again). I was determined to wear the coat I’d brought, even when it was 80 degrees in Alaska, just as I had on my last visit. Thankfully, the glaciers gave me the perfect excuse. As for the overweight luggage fees… let’s just say that number is staying a secret.
From Sept 22–26, I switched gears for the 8th Annual Royal Caribbean President’s Cruise, which I’ve now attended four times (I skipped last year while on the Ultimate World Cruise). This year’s theme was the World’s Biggest Party Weekend, although it lasted well beyond the weekend. Royal Caribbean also celebrated a birthday, with nightly Birthday Bash events and balloon drops (my favorite!).
It was my first time sailing a mega ship like Utopia of the Seas. The ship was brand new, the cabins were huge, and the energy was all about the party atmosphere. I did a B2B2B2B on her, staying in the same cabin for all four cruises. The highlights? Rev Run (from Run-DMC) and DJ Ruckus, who kicked things off with a sailaway party and wrapped it all up with an unforgettable 80s & 90s Block Party farewell concert. They even performed during the Royal Day Takeover at Perfect Day at CocoCay, though I skipped that one… There is just so much of Perfect Day you can take, and on this trip, I went 4 times and had been there several times before. The Florida + Bahamas heat was just too much for me!
I even made my first toga for the toga party on board!
This was definitely a season of big adventures, big ships, and big memories. Stay tuned for a recap of each city I visited!
