This video demonstrates the typical behavior of California ground squirrels approaching a feeding station under the three different experimental treatments presented by Putman and Clark (2014). Squirrels approaching stations with no snake present, and where they have not encountered a snake in the recent past, move forward readily and feed without exhibiting any of the typical antisnake behaviors. Squirrels approaching stations with live rattlesnakes nearby exhibit the species-typical suite of antisnake behaviors, including intensive tail flagging. Squirrels approaching stations that have no rattlesnake, but at which they have recently encountered a rattlesnake, move cautiously, startle easily, and frequently exhibit tail flagging behavior, even though the snake is no longer present.
