Jimmy V & Cardiac Pack vs. Dean Smith & Michael Jordan | 1983 - NC State vs. UNC

Jim Valvano's "Cardiac Pack" came up clutch well before the 1983 NCAA Tournament run that saw the Wolfpack cut down the nets. In the 1983 ACC Tournament, unranked NC State faced the defending national champion Tar Heels with Dean Smith led roster that featured Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Matt Doherty.

NC State had some star power of their own, with a roster featuring Thurl Bailey, Dereck Wittenburg, Sidney Lowe and Lorenzo Charles - and they showed up when Valvano needed them most. NC State swarmed Jordan all night, holding him to a pedestrian stat line of 13 points, 3 rebounds, 4-12 FG, and fouling out with 3:42 remaining in regulation.

The Wolfpack trailed the No. 5 Tar Heels by as many as six points with less than two minutes left in overtime, but refused to lay down and clawed back for a 91-84 upset win. The Cardiac Pack would take down Ralph Sampson and No. 2 Virginia in the championship game to clinch their spot in the NCAA Tournament, and the rest is history.
