A report in Nature earlier this year found that nearly 60% of infectious diseases are susceptible to being aggravated by climate change and the most vulnerable populations – who have contributed the least to climate change – are set to bear the brunt of this burden. Some already are.
For some of these diseases, there are currently no approved vaccines or medicines, and where medicines do exist, drug resistance threatens their efficacy. It is clear that new vaccines, medicines and other tools for climate sensitive diseases are urgently needed but the issue is often missing from the climate change agenda.
