To fully understand how to be creative within a team or organization, you first need to understand the basics of how individuals are creative. Both individuals and teams go through the creative process in their own way. Importantly, the level of risk associated with going through the creative process by yourself, as opposed to group creativity, is very different. Individual creativity goes through several stages. Each of those stages refine the creative idea more and more. By the time the idea is presented to another person, that creative idea has usually spent a significant amount of time inside the creative process being refined. Because the idea has been honed to near perfection, the psychological risk associated with presenting it to a group, team, or supervisor is much lower than it was earlier.

However, when creating ideas within a group setting the level of psychological risk increases dramatically. Throwing half throught-out ideas is considerably more risky than thinking through each idea carefully before telling the group. This is why group creativity can be difficult at times. However, group creativity is invaluable to organizations because team creativity allows creative ideas to evolve in an emergent way. Said different, no one person is actually controlling where the idea is going. Each team member influences the overall idea by offering a piece of the puzzle. Within the individual creative process, a creative person has compete control over the outcome. This can lead to more-predictable ideas. Group creativity has a huge advantage here because no one person is dominating the evolution of the idea.
