Mørketidas Farger (Sámi Yoik) - Live ft. Elin Kåven

The Sámi yoik «Mørketidas farger» («Colors of the Polar Night»), as performed by Sámi musician, singer, and tradition bearer Elin Kåven, weaving our voices into the whole, summoning the colors of the polar night. From the fall concert «Til Nord» («To the North») at Kulturkirken Jakob in Oslo, November 3rd 2024.

Yoik is a traditional Sámi musical form that conveys emotions, stories, and connections to nature, people, and places through melody and voice. It is about channeling the essence of what you yoik, giving a voice to that which has none.

This was the wisdom shared with us by tradition bearer Elin Kåven from Karasjok in Sápmi. Together with Elin, we painted a picture of the colors of the polar night here in the North—the deep blues of twilight, the subtle shades of snow in the fleeting winter light, and the vibrant dance of the northern lights. The experience became a magical performance that captivated both us and the audience.

Thank you, Elin, for sharing this vital part of the North with us, for bringing the Sámi spirit into our concert, and for allowing us to partake in your yoik. Giitu!
