A Hull MP has stated that Sir Keir Starmer "should be ashamed of himself" regarding the Government's proposed changes to jury trials. Karl Turner, a former barrister, contended that removing the right to a jury trial in certain situations is "not in line with the beliefs of the Labour Party."
This marks the first time since his election in 2010 that the East Hull MP has defied the party whip to vote against the proposals. Mr. Turner was the only Labour MP to oppose the Government's plans but expressed optimism about rallying enough support within the party to block the legislation if it is introduced later this year.
The Government's announcement includes plans to eliminate jury trials for offenses that carry a potential prison sentence of three years or less. Additionally, the right to appeal decisions made by magistrates' courts to crown courts will also be limited.
According to the Government, these proposals are necessary due to a significant backlog of cases awaiting judicial attention, with tens of thousands of victims waiting for justice and the caseload projected to reach 100,000 by 2028. In announcing the changes, they stated that "approximately a quarter of cases that would otherwise require a jury will be expedited to be heard by a judge, thereby reserving jury trials for the most critical cases."
