Meagan’s Walk: Creating a Circle of Hope was founded by Denise Bebenek in 2001, the year she lost her cherished five-year-old daughter Meagan to a cancerous brain tumour.

Our mission is to share the message of hope, to increase public awareness about brain tumours and the devastating effects they have on children and their families, and to raise valuable financial resources for research into paediatric brain tumours - the leading cause of cancer-related death in children and young people under the age of 20. We do so through the love and generosity of a dedicated group of volunteers, school groups, sponsors and other supporters.

Our flagship event is our Walk, which takes place annually on Mother's Day weekend. Each year thousands of participants of all abilities take part in the 5km walk, which culminates in an human hug around the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), sending strength and love to those within.

Many other events take place throughout the year, meaning Meagan's Walk isn't a one-day event, but a 365-day-a-year message of hope. A winter Gala is our annual opportunity to celebrate our many successes, and includes great food and entertainment, and the presentation of a cheque for funds raised the prior year to a team of the world's top doctors and researchers.

Our school programs help spread the word, raising awareness about brain tumours and empowering all children, both healthy and ill, to care for one another. Community events further contribute to this important cause, raising much-needed funds for and awareness about this devastating illness.

Since its inception Meagan’s Walk has raised more than $3.1 million. Funds raised are directed to SickKids, which houses The Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre (BTRC). Opened in 1999 and host to the only program in Canada dedicated to paediatric brain tumour research, the BTRC makes outstanding contributions in the world of scientific discovery and is considered to be one of the most important research centres in the world.
