While forgotten today, the Law of Adoption was the original doctrine of Eternal Family Sealings taught and practiced by the Latter-day Saints. Since most people were not going to be worthy of going to the Celestial Kingdom, the original sealing doctrine was grafting the Saints together through Adoption into one giant extended family, all linked in family lines back to Joseph Smith.

Even though it was referred to as “the sealing of men to men” in the Priesthood, the practiced involved whole families, women were adopted as daughters alongside their husband, and adoptive mothers were involved most of the time alongside adopted fathers. This was to establish the Celestial family Organize on Earth.

This presentation “A History of the Law of Adoption” explores the genesis of Adoption, when Adoption started being taught and practiced by the Saints, the peak of Adoption being a core social and spiritual doctrine to the Saints during the Trek west, when it started to be de-emphasized, and finally when the doctrine was rejected.
