Hundreds of floral tributes have already piled-up at palace gates, including Buckingham, Windsor and Balmoral, following the announcement of Prince Philip's death earlier today.

Flags were flown at half-mast across the country while thousands flocked to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to leave flowers and mourn.

The Duke of Edinburgh gave a lifetime of royal service to the country and was the Queen's beloved companion for more than 70 years.

Known for his no-nonsense approach and acerbic wit, Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history.
