EP2. SAILING TASMANIA - Dunalley / Denison canal and Taranna

Hi folks - This is EP. 2 Sailing in Tasmania.
In this series, we sail for Hobart to collect our daughter who is flying in from South Africa to sail with us.
Since we have sailed down the east coast of Tasmania, we decide to opt for a short cut through the Dunelly / Denison Canal, which should be well planned on account of shallows, current, tide and wind.
We demonstrate how we planned for this crossing, the obstacles and natural characteristics we were mindful of when planning - and more.
We share information also for future sailors wishing to cross through the canal so for viewers not interested in the sailing aspect, these portions of the video may not appeal to you, however, even for those who do not sail, you may find it interesting to note what we as sailors need to consider when sailing in different regions around the world.

Denison Canal is cut through the isthmus of the Forestier Peninsula of Tasmania.
In 1854, pressure by east coast settlers to improve transport by avoiding the longer, mostly rough voyage around Tasman Peninsula, resulted in Lt-Governor Denison commissioning a study.
Tenders were called in 1901, construction began and the canal was opened in 1905.
The canal itself is 895 metres long, and 2.42 km including dredged approaches.
The width is around 34 metres at ground level reducing to 7 metres wide at low tide. Our catamaran IMPI is 7,7m width, so careful planning is required.
Water depth ranges from 2.6 to 3.9 metres according to tide.
Originally there was a hand-operated swing bridge that was replaced by an electrically powered bridge in 1965.
Although the canal was used by small vessels and east coast traders, the canal is nowadays is restricted to fishing and pleasure craft by shifting sand bars in Blackman Bay making dredging of the canal a necessary ongoing practice.

Westerly winds block our passage to Hobart necessitating Impi to 'Fall off' instead for shelter in a quaint and historic region around Taranna, in Little Norfolk Bay.
