11/12/20 It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood and I decided to take a walk in the sunny afternoon. I hadn't been through Pittsburgh's Allegheny Cemetery in a LONG time, so I decided to walk from the Oakland neighborhood over to the Lawrenceville neighborhood and then walk through the place and then back. Thats good exercise, plus I would check out the pretty fall colors on the leaves and also the abundant wildlife that one can surprisingly see in that cemetery. I took my camera with me just in case I spotted a good photo. The cemetery had many men hard at work, cutting down a BIG dead tree and also clearing the vast amount of fallen leaves. These workers also produced a large amount of noise, which may be why I didn't see any deer. Very strange not seeing any deer here. I did see a HUGE amount of geese and maybe a dozen crows, which are always a little creepy even outside of cemeteries. The I saw .....it
As I walked on the road toward a "T" intersection, I spotted some leaves starting to swirl around just above the grass, over a grave. At first I didn't think much of it - Its like you see on the sidewalk or street. The wind blows some light debris up maybe a foot, it swirls around a bit, maybe moves a few feet, and then it all drops. But this, what to call it, "vortex" (? ) kept growing higher and higher, until it was about 6 feet high, and it drew in more leaves and increased in width to maybe 2-3 feet. Then it started to move, first off the grass and onto the road and then....toward me ! YIKES! Its like something right out of a ghost movie !
Should I run? Should I pray? Should I poop my pants? NO! First I got out of its way, as ghosts and wind always have right of way. ;-) Hey I didn't want it touching me. Then I grabbed the camera and thought that whatever this is, its strange and I am going to get photos. I don't think even great Pittsburgh photographers like Andy Warhol or Dave DiCello ever got any ghost photos. The vortex went right by me. I took 8 photos but then realized I needed more, that still images would not give a good account of the event. So I did hit the record button and captured the end on video.
So what was it like as it passed by me? As for the visual, the photos and video do represent what I saw. As far as sound, you can hear the crows CAWH CAWH CAWH and the very expected hissing, ruffling, clicking noise of leaves on pavement. There were no other vocalizations. No smell and no taste. And no feelings of extreme cold, no force pushing or pulling, etc. Sorry ghost hunters, but theres really no other juicy evidence to support a ghost theory.
In summary, I witnessed a wind + leaves vortex originate over a grave, move off the grass onto a road, move directly at me when it could have moved in any direction, travel down a road, move into the grass, move to another grave, and terminate.
Ghost or Creepy Coincidence?
