The Prusik hitch is the preferred gripping or friction knot. It is easy to remember how to tie, compact and grip the rope when pulled in either direction. Tie by placing a loop near the rope then passing the double fisherman's bend around the rope and through the loop. Dress the bends from the center out and the bridge on the outside. To release, start by pushing on the bridge to loosen the hitch.
