The sermon, delivered February 28, 2026, at Halsted Road Baptist Church and titled “MARK 13 | STAY AWAKE,” opens with the story of Paul and Silas in Philippi—beaten, imprisoned, and freed by an earthquake at midnight—then their flight to Thessalonica where three Sabbaths of synagogue preaching led to conversions among Jews, God-fearing Greeks, and prominent women before jealous opponents incited riots.

Mark 13:24-37 ESV — “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
Additional verses cited include 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 ESV, 1 Peter 1:24–25 ESV, 1 Peter 5:8 ESV, and Ephesians 6:18 ESV.

At its core the teaching anchors hope in Christ’s promised return amid tribulation: after cosmic signs and intense suffering, the Son of Man will appear in clouds with power and glory to gather His elect, fulfilling every word while heaven and earth pass away; the fig-tree lesson and the statement that “this generation will not pass away until all these things take place” confirm that the events (including Jerusalem’s fall) signal His nearness at the gates, yet the exact day and hour remain known only to the Father. The repeated command—Mark 13:35–37 ESV (“Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come… lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake”)—calls every believer to vigilant, prayerful alertness like servants awaiting their master, rejecting complacency, distraction, or spiritual sleep so they may be found faithful in stewardship and holy living when He returns suddenly. This watchful hope, sustained by the Holy Spirit and God’s sovereign shortening of the days for the elect’s sake, turns trials into testimonies and unites all believers (regardless of eschatological view) in expectant endurance until the Master comes.
