Today I have a bit of a demo of a synth which is pretty underrated. It is the Novation KS4 (4-octave keyboard). I've had 2 Novation KS Racks in the past and when I saw the keyboard version available I just had to have it, especially for the price.

So what makes this virtual analog synth special? First of all its multi-timbral, 4 parts sharing 16 voices each with 3 oscillators. Next, each part has its own independent effects section!!! (reverb / delay / chorus / eq / distortion / vocoder). You can even assign one part as drums, or use its arpeggiator. It has most controls on the face of the unit, there's not much menu diving, it's pretty easy to use. The keybed is a FATAR weighted model with aftertouch, the same keys used on the Novation SL midi controller, they feel really nice. The keyboard is solid, that's a metal chassis and its heavy.

I mainly use this keyboard for string/pad sounds, the 3 oscillators with variable pulse width/shape of sawtooth waves give extra phasing and it really thickens the sound. It is able to do FM tones as well, although only 2OP, the feature is there but requires some menu/manual diving.

It only has 2 LFOs and they are only assignable to certain things. The presets are a little bit outdated, and at first impression can make the synth sound a bit sterile and lacking character but with a little tweaking, it can sound massive.

This keyboard, to me, Novations answer to a multi-timbral Juno synth, it's simple, easy to use, full of features and can sound great with a little bit of effort... and for the price, you get quite a capable and well-built synth and a nice collector's piece.
