In short, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is confirmed to be in the same canon as the Avatar movies. According to a recent interview with Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Games, Sean Shoptaw, the Avatar production team is working very closely with Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment to ensure that the game stays faithful to the source material. Apparently, Avatar's producer, Jon Landau, has been tasked with working directly with Massive Entertainment, reporting to the team nearly every day.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to be one of the most faithful video game adaptations of all time, and is apparently designed to be an extension of the main story, much like a Star Wars spin-off, a side story running concurrent with the main timeline but offering a new perspective on the events. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is being designed specifically to flesh out the lore of this universe, a universe in which only the very surface has been tapped into so far.

Frontiers of Pandora will, however, be set within the broader Avatar universe, and directly after the new Way of the Water film. The movie's producer, Jon Landau, tells Polygon that "Frontiers of Pandora takes place in the western frontier of Pandora... That's not somewhere we've gone before. It takes place in the timeframe after Avatar: The Way of Water opens, but before the one-year time cut in the movie."

As the name would suggest, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be set on the same planet as the movie series, but will apparently bring a whole host of new characters to the world. New Na'vi clans will be explored, as will their place in Pandora's ecosystem. According to Disney, these new clans will have direct links to the movies, and some scenes in-game may even occur in the upcoming Avatar 2: The Way of Water.


Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandora is set to release in 2022 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.


Ubisoft is yet to confirm an Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora release date. While many had expected the new Avatar game to launch alongside Avatar: Way of the Water on December 16, 2022, Ubisoft has since said that this won't be happening. In fact, there's a chance Frontiers of Pandora may not even be a new game for 2023, with the publisher only going so far as to confirm that it'll launch within Ubi's next fiscal year – which falls between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.
