A Christian lieutenant, Samuel Kamalesan, was dismissed from service after repeatedly refusing to accompany his Sikh, Rajput, and Jat troops into a gurdwara during routine prayers. He also refused simple rituals like holding a thali or offering flowers, claiming these violated his personal faith. The Supreme Court rejected his appeal, calling his conduct “religious ego” that damaged troop cohesion. The bench emphasised that the Army’s strength lies in honouring all faiths and maintaining harmony among diverse units. Despite guidance from seniors and even a pastor’s assurance that such rituals did not violate Christian beliefs, the officer remained adamant. The court ruled that personal belief cannot override military discipline, sending a decisive message on unity in uniform.
