Описание к видео Saint Ignatius Maloyan Monument Unveiled in Syria

In a deeply moving ceremony in Qamishli, Syria, the Christian community gathered to unveil a monument honoring Saint Ignatius Maloyan, a martyr of the Armenian Genocide. A solemn Mass in the church courtyard followed. Many attendees traced their ancestry to Mardin—Maloyan’s birthplace and the site of his martyrdom in 1915. Bishop Antranig Ayvazian of the Armenian Catholic Diocese of Jazira and Euphrates, along with Rev. Archimandrite Levon Yeghiaian of the Armenian Orthodox Diocese, led the tribute. Born Shoukrallah Maloyan in 1869 in Mardin, he was sent at age 14 to study at the Bzommar convent in Lebanon. Ordained on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, he took the name Ignatius in honor of the martyr of Antioch. In 1911, he was appointed Archbishop of Mardin, tasked with reviving the shattered diocese. During World War I, on June 3, 1915, Turkish forces arrested Bishop Maloyan and 27 church leaders. The following day, 25 priests and 862 Armenian Catholics were also imprisoned. When ordered to convert to Islam, Maloyan refused, declaring his faith in Christ. Tortured and chained, Maloyan remained steadfast. On June 10, he and 447 others were forced into the desert. He prayed with them, administered absolution, and shared the Eucharist. Witnesses recalled a heavenly peace among the captives. Although he was offered another chance for conversion to save his life, Maloyan again rejected conversion more powerfully. Then, Mamdooh Bek, the police chief, shot him. The monument now stands as a testament to faith, courage, and the enduring spirit of a community that refuses to forget its saints and its history.
