Maldives vlog – Today I experienced something most tourists never do. I left the resorts behind and explored one of the local Muslim islands of the Maldives, discovering the beautiful culture, hospitality, and simplicity of everyday life away from the Instagram version of this country.

The day started on the beach of Malé, the capital of the Maldives, soaking in the 30°C tropical heat before catching a speedboat to Huraa Island, a peaceful local island that truly shows the real Maldives. Most people only see the luxury resorts, but I wanted to connect with the local people, experience authentic life, and see what it’s like for Muslims living in this unique 100% Muslim country.

Before we caught the boat, there was a bit of chaos – we hadn’t withdrawn any cash for the island and had to rush to the port. But we made it on time and had the boat all to ourselves! It was my wife’s first-ever boat ride, making it a special memory we’ll never forget.

Arriving on Huraa, we were greeted with warm hospitality. Locals helped with our bags and handed us cold apple juice — a small gesture that meant so much. We checked into a lovely guesthouse, just £30 per night, proving you don’t need to spend thousands to experience the Maldives.

Our guesthouse provided bikes, and we set off cycling around the island, meeting locals, buying snacks, and seeing the vibrant shops and peaceful streets of the village. The people of Huraa are some of the kindest I’ve met. The island was full of Islamic reminders — quotes from the Qur’an and hadith beautifully displayed everywhere. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply Islam shapes life here.

We visited the local beach, and I shared my thoughts on how beautiful and important it is to hold on to Islamic tradition even in places known for tourism. I pushed my wife on a beach swing (she hilariously fell off), and we ended the day with some delicious halal chicken burgers before returning to the sea to swim and reflect on the beauty of this untouched island paradise.

To close the day, I visited the local mosque for Maghrib prayer, where the kids welcomed me and I captured a peaceful Qur’an recitation. It was a touching way to end the day and reminded me of how connected Muslims are across the world, even in places like these.

If you’re planning a trip and want to explore the real Maldives, not just the resorts, I highly recommend visiting a local island like Huraa. This is travel for the soul, especially for Muslims who want to experience Islamic hospitality in one of the world’s most stunning countries.
