One area God prepares you for marriage is your character.

Marriage is a ministry. It is about giving and serving. It changes you. But even while you wait on God you should prepare yourself. Well we are all supposed to be working on ourselves. Or at least waiting on the Holy Spirit to help us.

We may be gifted and even anointed, but character is what keeps us at the top. And character matters in issues of relationships. Every one wants a Mr. and Ms. Right, but not everyone wants to be Mr. or Ms, Right.

There are character triumphs and fails in the Bible. Let us start with some fails.

Saul the first king of Israel is a good example of anointing without character. He disobeyed God . In 1 Samuel 15 he was commanded to attack the Amalekites and finish them, because they had an anti-semitic spirit. They wanted to destroy Israel.

Saul, however spared the king and some animals. God said “ I regret that I have made Saul King because he had turned away from me...”

Samuel told Saul: “ When you were once SMALL IN YOUR OWN EYES, did you not became the head of the tribes of Israel?

Then the prophet said: “ rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft, arrogance like the evil of idolatry”

Saul did not really repent of his sin of pride and rebellion but he said: “ I have sinned but please honor me before the elders of my people...”

He was still concerned about his reputation when he should have been broken!

Samson was highly anointed of God but had a problem with women. He was an anointed man of God who slept with prostitutes and ended up with one Delilah. The Bible says these sad words:

20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”

He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him. Judges 16.20

Jezebel was actually a good helper to her husband but had a hard heart. She arranged for a murder to be committed over a vegetable garden. God was heart broken over Ahab and his evil wife. The Bible says:

“I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. 21 He says, ‘I am going to bring disaster on you. I will wipe out your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free.[a] 22 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have aroused my anger and have caused Israel to sin.’

23 “And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: ‘Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of[b] Jezreel.’

24 “Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds will feed on those who die in the country.”

25 (There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)

It matters!

Then there are the calm women. Ruth for example. So loyal she stayed with her mother in law for many years.
