These photos are from our first day in Montreal (February 18, 2011) in Montreal. After a comfortable ride with Via Rail from Toronto to Montreal we took a taxi our hotel in Old Montreal: the Auberge Bonaparte. Shortly after arriving I got a restaurant tour at the Restaurant Bonaparte from co-owner Martin Bedard which included a peek into the pots inside the kitchen. Then followed a hotel tour with Michael Banks, the hotel's general manager.

The historic Auberge Bonaparte is located just southeast of the Basilica of Notre-Dame and from my room I had a beautiful view of the church steeple. The rooftop patio of the hotel provides a breathtaking panoramic view of all the sights in Old Montreal.

In a walk along Rue St-Paul, Montreal's oldest street, we admired the many attractive restaurants, bistros, galleries and shops that line this busy street. Place Jacques-Cartier, Montreal's historic main square, was decked out with beautiful lighting for the Montreal Highlights Festival, and a colourfully lit-up ferris wheel was inviting people for a chilly ride on the waterfront. The Marche Bonsecours with its gorgeous silver dome and the Bonsecours Chapel are two architectural gems not to be missed.

In the evening we enjoyed "And then there was Light", a phenomenal multi-media show inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame before we settled in for a multi-course meal with owners Louis Ladouceur and Martin Bedard of the Auberge Bonaparte. The Grand Marnier soufflé was heavenly!
