Nelson and Crane are separated after they are shot down while pursuing a mysterious submarine stealing nuclear missiles. Nelson, recovered by a Navy destroyer, is bent on destroying the sub, not realizing Crane is being held on board.

Michael Ansara returns to Voyage as Tomas Ruiz, captain of the enemy submarine. He previously boarded the Seaview in the season 1 episode "Hot Line" and the "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" feature film. Ansara played Kang in the 1968 Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove."

Battle sequences between the destroyer and submarine were first seen in "The Enemy Below (1957)." David (Al) Hedison was cast as Lt. Ware in the movie.
