Evin prison in Iran's capital, Tehran, is notoriously violent, and home to thousands of inmates, including many of the country's political prisoners.

The prison also includes a special wing for LGBT+ people and through the testimony of a transgender inmate, Helma, who appeared in leaked CCTV footage, the BBC has been able to verify accounts of mistreatment.

The Iranian government routinely denies allegations of human rights violations, saying conditions inside Evin prison meet all necessary standards, and prisoners are not mistreated.
