I visit Luis Photos, a historic photography shop in Gibraltar, to search for photographic evidence that may explain why so many people remember Gibraltar as an island. Inside, I meet Maria, the shop’s owner, and ask the same question that has followed this journey from borders to museums:

Has Gibraltar ever been viewed — or remembered — as an island?

As we examine decades-old photographs together, images of the lagoon area stand out — a body of water that once surrounded parts of the Rock. I classify these images as reality residue: visual traces that resemble a version of Gibraltar encircled by sea rather than connected by land.

Using the photographs in her archive, Maria offers a unique breakdown of Gibraltar’s history in this timeline, revealing new insight into land reclamation, shifting geography, and the sandy isthmus to the north of the Rock — an area that continues to produce conflicting memories and testimony.
