Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025
The government of Bangladesh enacted a major overhaul of its labour laws in November 2025, driven by international pressure to improve workers' rights and conditions.
Expanded Definition of "Worker": The law broadens the definition of a "worker" to include previously excluded categories such as domestic workers, seafarers, and sales/business development roles, granting them legal protections.
Easier Trade Union Formation: The threshold for forming a trade union has been significantly lowered. The previous 20% worker support requirement is removed and replaced with a tiered system, requiring as few as 20 workers in smaller establishments (up to 300 employees) to register a union.
Enhanced Benefits and Protections:
Maternity Leave is increased from 112 to 120 days (16 to 17 weeks) with full pay.
Mandatory Provident Fund is required for establishments with 100 or more permanent workers.
Prohibition of Blacklisting: The practice of blacklisting workers by employers has been declared illegal.
Anti-Discrimination Measures: The law explicitly bans wage discrimination based on gender and mandates the formation of a 5-member "Complaint Resolution Committee" to address sexual harassment in every workplace.
Right to Refuse Unsafe Work: Workers are granted the right to refuse work if they believe it poses an imminent danger to life or health.
