With a father from Honduras and a mother who was born in the United States but raised in Cuba, Serrano navigated a complex cultural identity, particularly during a time when U.S.-Cuban relations were fraught with tension. Growing up in Brooklyn during the 1960s, Serrano experienced firsthand the societal conflicts of the era, including the stigmatization of his Cuban heritage amidst political hostility between the two countries.
