Originally sung by George Washington Johnson, this is John Yorke AtLee's "cover" version recorded on October 1, 1898 for E. Berliner' Gramophone, the very first flat disc records in existence. Most copies of both Mr. Johnson's and Mr. AtLee's recordings are on cylinder records of the time.

Yes, the sound is atrocious. This was recorded basically by singing into a giant cone that made marks in the medium. The microphone was not yet invented. Also this is not the proper system for playback of a record like this. Someday I hope to find one.

This was recorded on a Technics SL-D2 that was modified for 78 rpm. These records had no real consistent rpm but it is thought that many hovered around 70 rpm so I dialed in a slower speed. The cartridge is designed for 78 rpm records and probably not the best for this application. It is a Shure M78S
