On behalf of St. Lucie County Public Works, Asphalt Paving Systems (APS) is repaving 19 roads around the County in 2025. Chip sealing is the preferred method for many of these roads, as they typically carry lower traffic volumes. Crews reclaim existing asphalt millings as part of the roadway preparation. Cement was mixed with that material to improve the overall the structure of the road.

After the surface is prepared, a thin layer of heated asphalt liquid is sprayed onto it. Small chips are placed and compacted into that layer. Once complete, chip seals can add 10 to 15 years of life to the roadway.

The chip sealing process may leave small rocks or pieces of asphalt along the surface of the road. Driving recklessly or at increased speeds can kick up some of that debris, which can lead to chipped glass, damaged paint, or even injuries to pedestrians. Please drive with extra caution and obey speed limits.
