History

The Malinois derives its name from Malines, the French name for the Flemish city, Mechelan, where the breed originated from. They were originally bred to be shepherds and guard dogs of Belgium in the 1800's. They have become adapt at livestock and guarding. They were especially popular in America during World War II. After the war, however, their popularity decreased. Recently, they grew in popularity surpassing the German Shepherd. Today, they are mostly used to work as police and military dogs, protection dogs and as pets.


Temperament

They are exceptionally intelligent, trainable dogs, and are known to be loving with their families and owners. They also serve as good watchdogs, though they are not aggressive enough to be an actual guard dog. They need lots of exercise, and will only be suitable for the most active homes. They are popular for use in herding, sledding, tracking and obedience competitions.
