Fractal Theory
Fractal theory is based on processes of iteration found in nature in which patterns are repeated at different levels. Like music, the beauty of the natural world is often built on an invisible mathematical foundation. The apparent chaos of nature often hides these patterns, and in the first movement, "Symmetry of a Leaf," this randomness is evident on the surface. The symmetry, however, is also present, hidden in a carefully measured expansion and contraction of range coupled with a retrograde that mimics the shape of a leaf.

Movement II, "Nautilus" begins with a two-note motive that gradually expands to its full iteration. Like a nautilus shell, it spirals out and back, always returning to its center, the low "C" of the flute.
Like the imitation in natural fractals, the third movement, "Dance" is built on sixteenth-note patterns that are repeated at every possible level. Still, the chaos of nature is present in the random, brief changes of meter and the evolution to a higher meter.
