This video looks at lenses and how they relate to a format. I unscrewed one of the C-mount lenses that was attached to my Bolex H16 as a lark and threw it on my Panasonic GF1.

The lenses used are a C Mount Hugo Meyer 16mm f1.5 Kino Plasmat and an Auto Vivitar 21mm f3.8. The recording was done on my ancient micro 4/3 camera; a Panasonic GF1.

By using a lens designed to cover a smaller format; standard 16mm film format, on a Micro 4/3 camera, I can illustrate how a lens projects a circle of illumination and a smaller circle of good definition.

Ideally the format of the camera is covered by the circle of good definition. Lenses that are soft or have falloff in the corners generally project a circle of good definition that is too small for the format.
