Blueberry Spelt Scones
The scone is a basic component of the Cream Tea. A Cream Tea , sometimes referred to as Devon cream tea, Devonshire tea, or Cornish cream tea, is an arrangement of afternoon tea, consisting of your choice of tea served with a combination of scones, clotted cream, jam, and if you like, some butter.
High tea, on the other hand, typically consist of a hot dish, followed by cakes and bread, butter and jam, or to start with cold cuts of meat, such as ham salad.
Another type of tea is the Afternoon tea, which is a light meal typically eaten between 3:30 pm and 5 pm. An afternoon tea is an arrangement of your choice of loose-leaf tea, typically accompanied by thinly-sliced bread and butter, delicate crustless sandwiches such as cucumber sandwiches or egg and cress sandwiches, some cakes and pastries such as Battenberg cake, or shortbread petticoat tails, or sometimes Victoria sponge. Scones with clotted cream and jam or preserves may also be served. The sandwiches are usually cut into small segments, either as fingers or triangles and pressed thin.
This small cake is similar to an American biscuit, made of wheat flour, sugar, baking powder/baking soda, butter, milk and sometimes eggs. The ingredients are mixed together to form a soft and sticky dough.
The custom of having an afternoon tea with bread or pastry is also common in some continental European areas.
I love to eat these when they are very hot and freshly baked right from the oven, with a dollop of clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam!
