Canada’s credit unions are remarkable. Credit unions have consistently centered the needs of Canadians and have stewarded a model that enables members to be co-owners. Credit unions advance equity in communities, empower Canadians and contribute to the economic, social, and environmental well-being of their members.

Credit unions are now working towards net-zero commitments and strategies to finance equitable climate transitions. Global temperatures have risen to 1.2 C. Optimistic climate models show that if the globe achieves net-zero emissions by 2050, warming could stabilize within a few decades. As a global leader Canada has committed to the Canadian Climate Finance Pledge which provides opportunities for rethinking climate finance investments, and transforming the discourse on responsible investment.

Credit unions play an important role in shaping and catalyzing further action on climate finance and moving beyond the measurement of tonnes of carbon mitigated per dollar invested, to whether Canada’s investments contribute to the shift to sustainable agroecology.

It is currently imperative to redirect capital toward a low-carbon and inclusive economy, in line with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This panel will unpack the approaches, strategies and commitments made within the Canadian credit union ecosystem as well as amplify and validate best practices and promising models.
