This History For Humans episode teaches the construction of the Panama Canal within the context of an America rising to become a global power under Roosevelt’s Big Stick Policy. The story picks up after the Spanish-American War when fiery debates about American imperialism were taking place with the anti-imperialist league, how the French tried and failed to build the canal, and what led President Theodore Roosevelt and America to intervene to secure that canal. Ultimately, students are left with an understanding of how the canal and the Big Stick Policy changed America’s position in the world, moving America closer to being the world police power it would soon become.

For teachers and homeschool parents, I have resources that go with this lesson that include interactive notesheets, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson with two parts: 1) Create a map of US imperialism with territories, the Panama Canal, and the area related to the Roosevelt Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine, and 2) Read three primary sources on arguments relating to US imperialism. Students breakdown their arguments then write one of their own about what they feel was the main motivation of Americans in annexing other lands. Engaging and skill building activities!
