Longitudinal reinforcement - This is the reinforcement provided along the length of the beam, usually on the top and bottom flanges. Longitudinal reinforcement resists the bending moment and tension in the beam.
Shear reinforcement - This is the reinforcement provided across the depth of the beam, usually in the form of vertical stirrups or bent-up bars. Shear reinforcement resists the shear force and torsion in the beam.
Side face reinforcement is provided on the sides of the beam, usually on the web. It is required when the depth of the web exceeds 750 mm to prevent buckling and cracking.
How do you calculate the number of bars in beams?
For Beam :
1)calculate the total load and find its bending moment.
2)multiply it with a FOS.
3)find the depth and width of the Beam (generally D =2B)
4)find the percentage of steel.
5)find the total area of steel.
6) divide the total area of steel by the area of one bar so you will get the total number of bars
As per the thumb rule, the steel quantity required to form the RCC beam should be 2% of the total volume of concrete. To calculate the steel quantity in the beam as 2% of the volume of concrete = 0.02 x 7850 x 5.29 = 830 kg.
