After the first ten pages (really 9-15) of setup, where we detail the protagonist(s) in his or her known world and get to know them a bit, we lower the boom.

The inciting incident, aka the catalyst, hits the protagonist's world like a bomb blast, ensuring things cannot continue as before. This could be very good news, very bad news, or perhaps an opportunity that cannot be passed up. This is the beginning of the actual story. Everything before that is just laying pipe, getting to know this world, our characters, and their dramatic need(s) before the flood, so to speak.

The inciting incident must always have STAKES attached. Not undertaking the mission, not seizing the opportunity, and staying home watching CI screenwriting videos on YouTube is simply not an option. Because if the protagonist does not go on the journey, the consequences will be dire.

Generally, the inciting incident should hit somewhere around page 10-15. Earlier than that is OK, but be cautioned: we still need to spend some proper screen time down the line getting to know our protagonist(s,) or else we may have little to no emotional investment in their success.

Later? If the inciting hits after page 15, beware! Some industry types may not go any further. The arrival of the inciting is a key metric that agents, managers, and producers use to judge a writer's skill level.

All of which is to say, do yourself and your screenplay a favor: make sure you have a punchy, high-stakes inciting incident that cannot be ignored, and best practices are to drop it in between pages 10-15 to demonstrate to the industry that you know screenplay structure.
