Eritrea Unveiled: A Journey Through Its Culture & Landscape

Eritrea, located in East Africa, has a rich history and diverse landscapes. Its early history includes the Stone Age and the Aksum Kingdom, which traded with the Roman Empire. After the decline of Aksum, Eritrea faced various conquests, including by the Ottoman Empire and later Italian colonization in the 19th century. Eritrea was under British administration after World War II, then united with Ethiopia in a federation, leading to the Eritrean War of Independence, which ended in 1991. Eritrea declared independence in 1993 but has faced ongoing political upheaval and a border conflict with Ethiopia. The country's population of 3.6 million includes ethnic groups such as the Tigrinya, Tigre, and Saho, and practices religions like Christianity and Islam. Geographically, Eritrea features highlands, lowlands, and the Red Sea coast. Its economy, based on agriculture and mining, faces challenges due to political isolation and insufficient infrastructure. Politically, it's a one-party state under President Isaias Afwerki, known for suppressing dissent and civil liberties. Eritrea's culture includes storytelling, literature, and cuisine like Zigni, Injera, Shiro, and Genfo.
