Welcome to Part 2 of 18 of our East 1999 Eternal 30th Anniversary Retrospective.
This episode is on Track 2 East 1999.

And per our sources the elusive Donald Cunningham at Ruthless Records had a hand in its art direction.

"East 1999" charted weekly on Billboard's Hot 100 (all genres) from December 9, 1995, to March 23, 1996. It was then absent from the charts for three weeks before re-entering the chart for a further two weeks bringing "East 1999"'s chart-week tally to 18 weeks.

Hidden Audio/Cool Finds
1st of only 5 songs on the album to feature Flesh~n~Bone… living up to the name “the 5th Dog” ! (5th Dog…. 5 songs….)

The single features killer artwork with additional illustrations drawn by Tyree Dillihay of Bob’s Burgers fame (link the interview!)

The song ends with a Ruthless explosion-type transition common at the time in west coast hip hop.

In the early 2000s DJ U-Neek released camcorder video clips dated September 6, 1995 of Krayzie and Flesh in the studio recording the clean version of the song presumably for the CD single and video. The clips also contain exclusive behind the scenes footage of the East 1999 music video shoot dated September 11th, 1995.


Mysteries
If any old school Bone fans are still around…. in the 90s and early 2000s, co-producer Tony C used to run a yahoo e-group that has been lost to time. If anyone has an archive or knows how to resurrect old yahoo e-groups it is surely a goldmine of information from the time period Bone fans love.

Is the east 19-99 chant at the end from any old soul or r&b songs? Anyone know?

And as some of you might have noticed…. The ending of East 1999 transitions seamlessly into Mr. Ouija 2 which shows up 13 tracks later.

Lyrics
Layzie - references his drug charge August 23, 1989 ('Tru Headz' interview 9/14/2015:    • Layzie Bone opens up about the crack era, ...  ) when at age 14 he went to jail and was sent to Texas, met Alzie Roundtree and his B.O.N.E. Crew being given the name Bizzy Bone.

Lay mentions a ton of his homies from Bone lore including Graveyard Shift, both Wallys (yes there are 2 Wallys, check out the thank you’s in the Faces of Death album booklet…so Bone’s Wally is Wallace Laird III….. whose father, Wallace Laird Jr, according to April 30, 1993 Cleveland Plain Dealer article, was murdered in August 1974… so if these two Wallys outlined in the song and thank yous are related it means Big Wally would be Bone Wally’s grandfather or Wallace Laird the 1st.. ), the High Rollers (we assume that’s the 93rd Street High Rollers), Rod Jay who every Bone fan needs to know about. Lay shouts out all 4 Bone members and a couple names left to interpretation: Little Will and Ren if the lyrics are correct? We wonder if the “old school” people serving their sentence and “be cool” eludes to the Alzie Roundtree and the B.O.N.E. crew he met when sent down to Texas? A rare mention, if so.

Krayzie - talks about his own run ins with the po-po while on the double glock. Sounds like Mo Hart gets a mention as well as indirectly mentioning Economies liquor store from Bone lore
Bizzy - possible Mo Mart mention, but on the acapella might not say that
